JV Lady Cyclones move to 5-0

  from staff reports
KINGSPORT -- Spearheaded by a 12-point performance from Hannah Fritz, Elizabethton's junior varsity put nine players in the scoring column on Monday as the Lady Cyclones defeated Jefferson County 47-31 in their first pool play game in the Kingsport Christmas Tournament.
Upping its record to 5-0, Elizabethton will play at 2 p.m. today, battling a Tennessee High team that fell to Jefferson County 64-51 on Monday.
If 'Betsy downs THS, it will receive a bye into Wednesday's semifinals, with a championship or consolation appearance to follow on the same day. If the Lady Cyclones lose, they will likely play a second game today, then two games on Wednesday.
Courtney Towle, Brittany Smith and Leah Henson added six points apiece for the Lady Cyclones against Jefferson County. Smith nailed a pair of 3-pointers, and Fritz and Jasmine Treadway connected on one apiece.
"We played pretty well -- pretty steady," said Elizabethton coach Harry Farthing. "We didn't have Marti Bush, who is our top scorer, so I was a little bit concerned. But Henson stepped up and played well in her spot, and Fritz continues to play well.
"We got good play from our point guards, Towle and (Kyla) Jones, and Treadway and Smith hit those threes off the wing, which is always nice. We were pretty balanced. Hopefully, we can beat Tennessee High and move into the semifinals."
Bush, a post player who was visiting family for the holidays on Monday, returns to the 'Betsy lineup today.
Laura Potts paced the Lady Patriots with 10 points. Jefferson County was held to six points or less in each of the first three quarters.
