Chess team delivers goods

   An excited Elizabethton Boys & Girls Club chess team won three individual trophies and an at-large first-place trophy in the 2003 Western N.C. High School Scholastic Chess Championship, which was recently held in Newton, N.C.
   Team coach Dr. Cosgrove is proud that Eastern Tennessee is well represented by Elizabethton with its three chess clubs: Elizabethton High, Happy Valley High and the Boys & Girls Club.
   Last year, Nashville hosted the national elementary school chess competition, and this year the national headquarters for the U.S. Chess Federation moved its office from New York to Crossville, Tenn.
   So the whole state is witnessing a revival of chess, and with its good showing, Elizabethton is building a formidable reputation -- even in North Carolina.
