Lady Buccaneers drop  pair in Marriott Classic

   ATLANTA, Ga. -- East Tennessee State's women's basketball team went on a run late in the second half, but Arkansas State hit some key three-point baskets and converted on its free throws down the stretch as the Lady Indians defeated ETSU 63-48 in the consolation game of the Atlanta Marriott NW Classic Saturday afternoon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta, Ga.
   The opponents came through in the clutch hitting 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) shots from the charity stripe in the second half and finished the game 73.7 percent from the line.
   Junior guard Kiya Verdell was only 4-of-15 from the field, but led the Lady Bucs with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Junior Lauren Trantham added 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Tiffani Mayes grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

   ATLANTA, Ga. -- East Tennessee State's women's basketball team shot a dismal 13-of-61 (21.3 percent) from the floor as Georgia Tech (3-1) handily defeated ETSU (1-3) 85-35 in opening-round action.
   The Lady Bucs were led offensively by walk-on sophomore Carla Akers, who scored a career-high nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point land, all in the second half. Defensively, sophomore Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had a career-high four blocks.
