Lady Buffs trim VI in AAC final

  LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- It's good to be the best. The Milligan women's soccer team knows the feeling.
  The Lady Buffs captured the 2004 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship Saturday afternoon by defeating rival Virginia Intermont 5-4 in a shootout after the two teams were tied at one each at the end of regulation.
  With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 11-9-1. Milligan's earlier regular-season match with VI ended in a 2-2 tie at Anglin Field.
  The fifth-seeded Lady Buffs defeated the top seed Covenant (Ga.) Friday and second-seeded Virginia Intermont on back-to-back days on Covenant's home field in Lookout Mountain, Ga.
  Virginia Intermont took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, only to see the Lady Buffs tie the match at the 11:29 mark with a goal from sophomore Kristin Zutt and the assist from senior Cora Deakins.
  Neither team was able to score in the remainder of the match.
  The players for Milligan in the shootout were freshman Dagmar Arnardottir, senior Jackie Goncalves, senior Kim Morris, junior Katie Caughell and freshman Bryndis Bjarnadottir, who nailed the winning kick.
  Milligan outshot Virginia Intermont 11-10 in the match, and sophomore goal keeper Melissa Thompson recorded five saves for the Lady Buffs.
  Next for Milligan is the NAIA Region XII Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
