Jr. 'Dogs succumb to Unicoi County

from staff reports

ERWIN -- The effort was there, but overall execution was a little bit lacking for the Hampton Junior Bulldogs on Monday night.
Led by Derrick Shelton's 12-point effort, the Unicoi County Patriots rallied past a Hampton lead with 13 points in the fourth quarter for a 38-32 basketball win.
"Unicoi is a well-coached, athletic team," said Hampton coach Leon Tolley. "Coach Hilliard had them ready to play. We did what we needed to do to win the game with the exception of making our lay-ups and free throws.
"I am extremely pleased with our effort, we just have to learn how to finish off a game."
The Bulldogs, who led 27-25 at the end of the third quarter, shot 5 of 17 from the charity stripe.
Justin Bentley led Hampton with 10 points, while Lucas Andrews and Jarred Irick hit for six apiece. Dustin Jaynes had five.
Andrew Lingerfelt and Drew Rice helped pace the Patriots with nine and eight points, respectively.
Hampton, now 1-1, entertains Fall Branch today. Games are set for 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
