VI eliminates Milligan
from staff reports
JOHNSON CITY--Virginia Intermont scored with
one second on the clock Wednesday to hand Milligan a heartbreaking
3-2 loss in the opening round of the AAC soccer tournament
at Citivan Park.
It was the first lead that Virginia Intermont
had all day. Milligan controlled the pace of the game until
giving up two late goals to their neighboring rival.
Milligan opened the scoring in the 29th minute
with a beautiful pass from Jason Hotchkin to Brian Okumu.
Okumu, normally a defender, went forward and put Milligan
on the board.
The Buffaloes led 1-0 until four minutes after
halftime, when Godfrey Mugisha got behind Milligan's defense
to tie the game at one.
Milligan answered five minutes late with a goal
from Alex Kimani, assisted by Travis Young.
VI tied the game back up in the 62nd minute.
The games was scoreless until the final minute,
with the ball bouncing around the net and finally getting
past the driving goalkeeper with one second remaining.
With the loss, Milligan ends the season with
9-9-1 record. Virginia Intermont advances to the second round
to face King College, which defeated Bryan College earlier
in the day 3-1. That game is schedule for Friday at 4 p.m.
