This past Friday, the Cloudland football team won big against South Pittsburg. Last night, it was the Cloudland team on the hardcourt making some noise as the Highlanders beat the Johnson County Longhorns 74-61.
"I thought we stuck with our game plan," said 'Lander coach Ned Smith, "We got the ball to the post and had a better shot situation."
In what was a tight game at the beginning, the Jones twins from Cloudland battled it out with Matt Cornett.
Caleb Denton and Robbie Tolley made some tight moves, with Judd Shoun doing his thing the opposite way. With hard defese giving Cloudland the 20-17 lead after one.
The second quarter was mostly even, with Johnson County taking a small lead. But Denton came back with a big three-point play leading Cloudland into the half with a 36-34 nod.
That would be the closest the 'Horns would get, as the second half was all Kyle Jones and the "Mighty 'Landers."
Cloudland opened up making the offensive plays they needed with good defense to back it up. Cornett would pull the Longhorns in some, but the 'Landers would go up 55-44 after three.
The 'Landers would not ease it any, taking a lead by as much as 16 in the fourth. Kyle Jones made some huge plays for the team, scoring on three straight occasions.
Michael Lipford added some help to the Longhorn cause, but it would be too late as Cloudland would win 74-61.
"Ned's done a great job up here," said Johnson County coach Austin Atwood, "That's about as well as we can play. But we gotta keep going."
Said Kyle Jones, who finished with 21 points: "It was a big win, we are improving day by day, I believe this game was more of a team effort. Everybody hit their big shots and we had a lack of turnovers."
"I think our defense played real well," said Robbie Tolley, who netted 18, "We did what we had to do inside and shut them down for the most part."
Matt Cornett led all scores with 26 and Judd Shoun had 19 for the 'Horns.
Cloudland had three more players with double digits as Caleb Denton (11), Rick Whitehead (10), and Kevin Jones (10) came up big.
Johnson County will visit Sullivan East next Friday, while the Cloudland Highlanders will host Tri-Cities Christian on Monday.
