The Milligan College Buffaloes soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University Tuesday evening by the score of 4-0 at Anglin Field.
Milligan (7-5-1) jumped on Southern Wesleyan early as freshman Stuart Makinson scored in the fifth minute with an assist from senior Steven Townley.
The Buffs scored another first half goal from Townley with the assist from sophomore David Lilly in the 40th minute to give the Buffs a 2-0 halftime lead.
The two goals of the second half for Milligan came within two minutes of each other. The third goal for the Buffs came from sophomore Travis Young unassisted in the 65th minute. Makinson struck again at the 67th minute with the assist from senior Ali Mohamed (Nairobi, Kenya).
The Buffs outshot Southern Wesleyan 22-10 in the match up as sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Fode (Surrey, BC, Canada) recorded six saves to help Milligan record its fourth straight shutout.
"It was a good match for us. We played well as we recorded our fourth shutout," said Milligan head coach Marty Shirley. "Now we can look forward to the matchup with Bryan on Saturday."
Next for Milligan will be a key home Appalachian Athletic Conference contest against Bryan (Tenn.) College Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Anglin Field.
The Milligan College Lady Buffs soccer team was shut out 2-0 by Appalachian Athletic Conference rival and nationally-ranked Covenant (Ga.) College Tuesday evening at Anglin Field.
Covenant is ranked 15th in the latest NAIA poll. With the result, the Lady Buffs now stand at 7-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the AAC.
Both goals for the Lady Scots came in the first half. At the 19th minute, Rebecca Sasscer scored the first goal with the assist from Kristine Solis, and at the 31st minute, Amy Smrcina scored an unassisted goal.
Milligan outshot Covenant 6-4 in the match up.
Next for the Lady Buffs is a non-conference road trip to Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University on Wednesday Oct. 13 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The next home match is Saturday, Oct. 16 as Milligan host nationally-ranked Houghton (N.Y.) College, which is ranked tenth in the current NAIA ratings, at 4 p.m.
