Beam named SoCon Defensive Player
of Week
from staff reports
JOHNSON CITY -- East Tennessee State LB Lamar
Beam was named the Southern Conference's Defensive Player
of the Week after a dominant performance last Saturday against
Elon.
The sophomore was a one-man wrecking crew as
he accumulated a game-high 11 tackles, with six for losses
and four quarterback sacks.
Beam came into the contest with 3.5 career sacks
in his ETSU career and eclipsed that mark in one game The
entire Buccaneer defense had come into the contest with just
three sacks on the season when they put nine sacks on the
Phoenix quarterbacks.
In what turned out to be the most important series
of the game, Beam stood tallest. Elon had battled to get within
31-15 and had the ball on the ETSU 45-yard line after recovering
the onside kick.
Beam sacked Phoenix QB James Murdaugh twice in
the ensuing series - on first down and again on third down
- with his third down sack leading to an interception by Bucs'
safety Montreal Harkley.
Following his phenomenal performance Beam now
leads the squad in tackles with 46, including nine for loss
of yardage.
Beam becomes the second Bucs' player to earn
Player of the Week honors on the defensive side of the ball
with Harkley also being honored after ETSU's September 23
contest with VMI.
