One Elizabethton Cyclone volleyball player has been invited to play the sport she loves in paradise.
Emilee Berry has been chosen to play in a tournament in Hawaii, an event that features some of the top juniors in 48 states.
"I was nominated to go to the Training Sports Hawaii Classic this summer," Berry said. "It's a really big honor. There were 200 girls chosen in the nation out of about 1,500 nominees. I'm real excited."
With this being such a big honor, it sort of came as a shock to Berry. She definitely worked hard this year so that she would get the invite.
"I was really surprised," Berry said. "I knew I really wanted to do it, so I worked hard to make sure my stats were up. It really surprised me. It was a big shock."
Now that she's gotten the invite, raising money becomes the next part.
Berry doesn't expect that to be a problem.
"I know there's a lot of support with businesses in our community that are always willing to help," Berry said. I'm really hoping that a lot of people are willing to contribute and help me to go."
Berry is looking at the trip as a chance to be noticed. Scouts from all over the country are going to be there, so she hopes the trip may pay dividends in that aspect.
"I know it would look really good on a college resume," Berry said.
EHS head volleyball coach Leslee Bradley was tickled to see Berry get invited.
"I was shocked," Bradley said. "I've probably gotten that application for about two or three years now. I've just always sat it aside, because we haven't had the strongest program, and it was kind of hard not wanting to pick one player out of the others. But this year I said 'what the heck we might as well try it.' I sent it in fairly early in the season, and since Emilee was the only junior I had on varsity last year I nominated her. And I'm excited that she is going to get to go play, because that's definitely a big opportunity."
Berry is looking forward to this trip to paradise.
"Definitely," Berry said when asked if this was an opportunity of a lifetime.
