TC hangs on to beat Lady Buffs

   GREENEVILLE -- Tusculum College won the first two games, but had to hold off a furious rally to defeat visiting Milligan College in five games Wednesday night at Alpine Arena in non-conference volleyball action.
   The Pioneers (5-17) won by scores of 30-21, 30-23, 27-30, 27-30, 15-11. TC avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Buffs (20-10) by winning their third straight on their home court. Milligan has their five-match winning streak halted.
   For a second straight night, junior Rachael Woods led the Tusculum attack with 22 kills and seven service aces. Sarah King posted 16 digs, while Rachel Clinton dished out 46 assists in the victory.
   Wendy Weaver led the Lady Buffs with 21 kills and three service aces. Setter Heather Lanning added 31 assists, while Melanie Black posted eight digs and three aces.
   In the first game, Tusculum broke a 5-5 tie with a 15-3 run to win the opener 30-21. In the second game, Woods recorded three aces while the Pioneers went on an 11-5 spurt to take a two-game lead winning 30-23.
   But in game three, Milligan led throughout the frame and held on for a 30-27 win. The fourth game went back and forth as the Pioneers looked to close out the match leading 25-21 late in the game. But the Lady Buffs used a 7-0 run to send the match to a fifth and deciding game.
   Game five was tight early, but the with score tied at 5-5, TC scored four straight points on Kirsten Manick's serve including an ace to move the Pioneers up 9-5. Woods, Clinton and Jamie Johnson each recorded kills and Allyson Kilgore posted a late service ace as TC closed out the match with a 15-11 in the game.
   Tusculum returns South Atlantic Conference play on Friday as they travel to Wingate University for a 7 p.m. match. Milligan returns to Appalachian Conference play on Saturday when they play at Bluefield College for a 1 p.m. contest.
