VI player wins Omni tourney

   Jorge Ascencio, Virginia Intermont's No. 1 seed, won the Omni Hotels South Central Region Tournament held this past weekend at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.
   Ascencio will play in the Omni Hotels National Small College Championships in Corpus Christie, Texas on Oct. 17. He defeated Miguel Martin from Freed-Hardeman University, 6-4, 6-2.
   The VI Cobras had three players reach the quarterfinals, more than any of the other nine teams in the tourney. Two of the teams are currently ranked in the Top 15 in the NAIA: Union University is 12th and Freed-Hardeman is 13th.
   Brandon Pike and Vinicius Bitencourt also did well for VI. They made it to the semifinals in doubles before falling to Cornejo/Sherrow from Lee University, 8-6.
   The Lady Cobras fared nicely in the event. VI's No. 1 seed, Kago Phatshwane, made it to the semifinals before falling to Maccio from Martin Methodist in the three sets.
   The No. 2 seed from VI, Vita Feldmane, won the consolation tourney.
