EHS freshmen blank 'Horns
from staff reports
Elizabethton's ninth graders pushed their current
winning streak to three games with an 18-0 shutout of Johnson
County at Paul H. McEwen Field in Mountain City.
The Cyclones got on the board in the first quarter
on a 12-yard pass play to Jake Berkley to Derek Nave. After
a scoreless third quarter, EHS put two touchdowns between
themselves and the Longhorns on Berkley's 8-yard run in the
third quarter.
Anthony Rainbolt broke loose for a 40-yard sprint
in the fourth quarter for the game's final score. Keeping
their opponents off the scoreboard was pleasing to head coach
Ryan Witten.
"Anytime you hold Johnson County to a shut out,
you're doing good," said the Cyclone skipper. "Our defense
held them all game. Defensive tackle Stephen Bowers and end
Austin Guinn both did a real good job.
"Offensively, Nathan Bishop caught two passes
for sixty yards and sparked us along. Those catches really
made us go."
Elizabethton improved to 3-3 on the season with
the victory. They return to action next Thursday when they
tackle conference rival Sullivan Central 5:30 p.m. at Dave
Rider Field.
