Satchell Paige is known for the phrase "don't look back, someone might be gaining on you."
This could be the case with the sophomore class at Elizabethton High School pushing for varsity playing time.
Behind the brilliant quarterback play of Preston Smith, Betsy rolled to a convincing 30-13 win over Sullivan South at Death Valley in a Monday afternoon affair.
"This is a great group of kids to work with," stated Cyclone coach Mike Hooks. "They all listen and are eager to learn."
Smith wasted no time making a statement on their first drive finding Josh Hutchins on a 38-yard pass completion on a third and twenty, putting Elizabethton at the seven. Brent Shaver scored on the next play for a 6-0 advantage. Elizabethton marched toward their second score sparked by two quarterback runs of 15 and 12 yards by Smith.
A 43-yard bullet from Smith to Austin Taylor gave Betsy possession at the nine. Smith scooted around the left end for another touchdown on the first play of the second quarter for a 12-0 lead.
Shaver added insult to injury on the third drive behind the blocking of Chase Turley, Zach Potter, A.J. Burke and Throne Potter. His third carry on the drive resulted in a 27-yard touchdown but the try for the PAT failed giving Betsy an 18-0 lead.
South got on the board thanks to a 47-yard pass from Carl Phillips to Evvan Tolley giving South possession at the five. Phillips carried five yards for the score cutting the Cyclone lead to 18-7 at the half.
Betsy sprang out of the gates strong in the third when Smith hooked up with Drew Hyder for a nifty 13-yard gain. A 27-yard completion to Hutchins set the stage for another Cyclone score.
Smith gave fans his impression of former Viking great Fran Tarkington by scooting through the Rebel defense for a 35-yard score with 4:05 remaining in the third period.
With Burke and Zach Potter laying the wood to a couple of South ball carriers Betsy regained possession and headed for paydirt again. Smith found Michael Price open for a 19-yard score giving Betsy a 30-7 advantage.
Betsy continued to pound on the Rebels with Andrew Kennedy, Justin Harmon and Jordan Peters laying bone crushing tackles on quarterback Phillips. Two consecutive sacks from Harmon and Chase Turley kept South out of the endzone until 35 seconds remaining in the game.
Phillips found Jordan Kilzmiller for a 40-yard strike to close out the scoring. Smith completed 7-of-9 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown.
Shaver rushed for 109 yards and two scores while Smith added 101 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Cyclone offense. Hutchins had a nice game with 51 yards rushing, a diving interception and three receptions for 48 yards.
"This team is mostly sophomores," added Hooks. "I am proud of all these kids. You couldn't ask for a better group to work with."
