from staff reports
BRISTOL -- Hundreds of young drag racers from all over the eastern portion of the United States converged on Bristol Dragway over the weekend for the Mike Bos & Sons Back To School Bash and one of Thunder Valley's finest captured top honors.
Elizabethton's Chad Cathell, who competes in the Junior Dragster Division 1 class at Bristol Dragway, captured the Piney Flats Bicycle 10-12 age division title over Cory Cox of McAlpin, Fla.
Cathell and Cox fought all the way to the finals before rain caused them to take their battle inside on Sunday. The finals had to be contested on the practice tree, which records reaction times and Cathell came away with the quickest reaction time and the victory.
Other winners included Megan Kerns of Milan, Mich., in the 8-9 age group, Thomas Jones II (Nancy, Ky.) in the 13-14 division, Jennifer Haddock (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 330' Outlaw group, Jordan Eaker in the Quick 32 class and Alex Richards in the 15-17 age group.
Scotty Roberts of Chattanooga captured the 7.90 Index victory while Carlton Thorton of Richmond, Va., took top honors in the 8.90 Index class. Bubba Stevens of Krum, Texas was the champion in the 9.90 division, Danny Hurst of Clinton, Tenn., took the win in 10.90 Index and Alexa Rick of Elyria, Ohio was the winner in 12.90 Index.
The Pizza Plus Bracket Series returns to action this weekend at Bristol Dragway with a doubleheader set for Saturday and Sunday that will decide the 2003 track championships. Gates open at 12:30 on Saturday and at 10:30 on Sunday.
