ETSU splits at UAB tourney

   BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- East Tennessee State's volleyball team knocked off Tennessee State 3-1 in the opening match of the University of Alabama-Birminghanm Tournament, but fell victim to red-hot Troy State 3-0 in their second game.
   The Bucs (2-4) took the first two games from Tennessee State before the Tigers pulled off a 31-29 decision to force a fourth game. In the final game, it was ETSU that got the job done with a dramatic 32-30 victory to seal the match.
   However, the Bucs ran into a buzzsaw in their match against Tory State. The Trojans forced seven receiving errors, as the Lady Bucs only converted on .115 of their attack attempts.
   The Bucs did get good efforts from Kate Steidle with 19 and 16 kills in the two contest, freshman Nicole Ryan with 22 kills in the Tiger match and Karen Freeburg with 16 digs against Tennessee State and 22 against the Trojans.
   The East Tennessee State women's golf team ranked 33rd after finishing up play at the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic in Myrtle Beach.
   Laura Diaz shot a team low 81, while Robin McCarley finished her first round shooting an 87 on the Bay Tree par 72. Kristen Fletcher and Danielle O'Reilly both shot a round of 90, while Kailey Brooks finished her 18 holes at 91.
   The Lady Bucs at 60 over were 47 strokes off the pace set by leading East Carolina.
