Lady 'Clones breeze past Hurricanes

from staff reports

MORRISTOWN -- Falling into the clutches of the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones on Thursday night proved to be an unpleasant experience for the Morristown East girls soccer team.
With Samantha McClay collecting two goals and two assists, and Tracey Smith adding a pair of goals of her own, 'Betsy rolled to a 5-0 victory in a non-district match.
The Lady Hurricanes mustered only two shots the entire night, and had zero in the second half.
Elizabethton wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as McClay, off an assist from Katie Presnell, scored eight minutes into the contest.
Only three minutes later Presnell picked up another assist as she set up a goal by Smith, putting the Lady Cyclones up 2-0.
From there things really died down until the early stages of the second half, when Ashley Green took an assist from McClay and banged the ball into the net for the third 'Betsy goal of the night.
McClay tallied an unassisted goal 11 minutes into the second half of play. With the aid of a McClay assist, Smith closed out the scoring at the 32nd minute.
"It was a pretty dominating performance," said Elizabethton head coach Bill McClay. "Because we scored so early, we let down a bit the second part of the first half. But we regrouped a bit a halftime and played much better in the second half. Everybody played, and the intensity in the second half was really good.
"All in all it was a pretty good night."
The Lady Cyclones return to Morristown this Monday to take on the West High Trojans, with game time set for 5:30 p.m. Elizabethton gets back on its home turf Tuesday night, hosting David Crockett at 7.
