Local team places second in nation

  from staff reports
The Elizabethton Soccer Association (ESA) is bringing national recognition to the local soccer scene.
The ESA U17 Black team recently placed second in the nation in the Challenge Sports 3v3 National Soccer Championships. The tournament was held Aug. 7-8 at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla., and included teams from across the country.
While three ESA teams qualified for the National Championships (U17 Black, U16 Orange, and U15 White), it was U17 Black who advanced to the finals after defeating teams from Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania. The team was trailing the defending National Champions from St. Petersburg, Florida, when the game was called due to severe thunderstorms.
All three teams advanced to the National Championships by placing in the top three in their respective age groups at the Challenge Sports Libby Tournament held June 5-6 in Johnson City.
U17 Black consists of Robert Cogan, Jeff Alman, Ben Carey, Justin Limebaugh, Adam Green and Drew LaPorte. The U16 Orange team consists of Ryan Gough, Chris Wilson, Josh Fair, Tyler Ross and Ryan Green. The U15 White team consists of EJ Crowe, Nathan McClay, Kurt Germaine, Jesse Egeler, Alex Henthorne and Matt Mottern. All players attend Elizabethton High School.
NOTE: 3v3 is three-on-three soccer, played with regulation equipment on a modified (smaller) field.
