Twins stop Indians

  from staff reports
Javier Sanchez and David Winfree stoked the Elizabethton Twins' offensive fires, and Chris Marini dominated from the slab as the team took a 6-1 Appalachian League victory over Burlington at Joe O'Brien Field on Saturday night.
Both players had a home run, highlighting a 3-for-4 performance by Sanchez and a 2-for-3 showing from Winfree.
Altogether, the Twins banged out nine hits in support of Marini, Dennis Medina and Frank Mata.
Marini started and pitched six shutout innings. He gave up just two hits, struck out 10 batters and had no walks while upping his record to 4-2.
Medina worked two innings before Mata tossed a scoreless ninth.
Luke Hughes and Deacon Burns each batted 1-for-3 for Elizabethton -- Hughes had a double -- and Sanchez tallied a pair of runs.
Elizabethton opened up a 2-0 lead in the third when Hughes doubled home Javier Lopez and Trevor Plouffe singled home Hughes.
A Winfree two-run homer -- his eighth roundtripper of the season -- made it 4-0 in the fourth, and Sanchez followed up a Jay Yaconnetti sacrifice fly in the eighth with his second homer of the year.
Burlington's lone run came in the seventh on a P.J. Hiser roundtripper.
