A state Championship football team and a who's who of city sports legends will be honored at the school where they made their name.
Elizabethton High School's elite will continue at the third annual Elizabethton High School Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 in the A. L. John Treadway Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
A reception will follow in the school's auxiliary gymnasium.
The largest induction of the ceremony will be of the 1938 State Championship Cyclone football team. Each player and coach on the squad will be honored deservedly according to their impressive abilities on the field.
"The reason for doing this," stated Harold Stout, Chairman of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee. "There have been other state championships at Elizabethton High School, but none will be as special as the '38 team was to the city of Elizabethton."
The Elizabethton High 1938 football team earned an undefeated season, and defeated Jackson High in Jackson for the prestigious title.
Members of that team include: Cot Presnell (Captain), E. Niles Brown (Coach), Zeb Presnell, Bailey Williams, Walter Maupin, Charlie Maupin, Everett Hayes, Robert Given, Ivan Hayes, Francis "Hank" Childress, John Large, Harold Stevenson, Jess Benton, Walter Lance, Haywood Elliott, Clarence Hale, John Laws, James Muncey, Ed Chambers, MacDonald Sturgill, Eugene Webb, Frank Crockett, John Dance, Earnest Rasar, Harvey Smith, Colyon Parker, Luther Boyd, T. J. Boswell (Coach).
Other outstanding athletes who gave so much and brought great honor to the school and city being inducted this year include Bill Broome (Football, Track), Dr. Howard Bowers (Football), Ron Carver (Football, Basketball, Baseball), Carmon Dugger (Baseball), Dale Fair (Football), Billy Bob Garrison (Football, Basketball, Baseball), Norman "Cotton" Hodge (Football, Baseball), John Holsclaw (Football), Danny Jenkins (Football), Travis Johns (Football), Don Marshall (Football, Boxing), Harry McKesson (Basketball), Vivian Norwood (Track), John Pansock (Football, Coach), and Dick Ryan (Baseball).
The event will be open to the public and free of cost. So please come out and support the history of Elizabethton High School sports in honoring these legendary figures.
