JDRL Eastern Finals to bring 600 racers to Bristol Dragway

   BRISTOL -- Some of the country's finest, and youngest, drag racers will descend upon Bristol Dragway July 15-17 for the NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts Junior Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals.
   More than 600 young drivers from 63 tracks in 20 states and Canada will be vying for a total purse of $98,000. This is the first time Bristol Dragway has hosted the event, something that dragway vice-president Fred King says, is quite an honor.
   "This has grown into a tremendous event," he said. "Over the last 10 years interest in youth drag racing has really taken off and that's obvious by the number of kids we'll have here for this event. We're thrilled to be hosting the Eastern Conference Finals and hope the kids have lots of fun and some great runs while they're here."
   During the event, drivers compete for team and individual honors and a share of the $98,000 purse. Each NHRA member track that runs junior dragsters may put together up to three teams of 10 drivers. Members of those teams earn points for their tracks, and the top scoring team wins the conference final. Prizes also go to the winning driver in each age category. A total of $11,500 in U.S. Savings Bonds is paid to each of the eight age categories (8-9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16-17)
   NHRA's O'Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League allows kids to experience the thrill of motorsports in a controlled environment. All junior dragsters must meet stringent NHRA technical and safety standards and drivers must wear a helmet, neck collar, safety jacket and safety gloves, as well as long pants, shoes and socks.
   A Test & Tune will take place at Bristol Dragway on Tuesday, July 13 and a Fun Race and Welcome Party will be held on Wednesday, July 14. Racing begins on Thursday, July 15 and continues through Sunday, July 17.
