Unicoi County, JC American prevail in District 5 activity

   Pitcher Seth Whitson came through in fine style for Unicoi County on Monday night.
   Twirling a one-hitter and striking out 15 batters, Whitson led his team to an 8-1 victory over Bristol Western in the 11/12-year-old District 5 Little League All-Star tournament at T.J. Burleson field.
   The game was close until the bottom of the fourth, when Unicoi pushed in five runs to extend a 2-1 lead to 7-1.
   Ethan Bennett and Aaron Blevins both batted 2-for-3 for the winners, with Wesley Carr going 1-for-2 and Whitson and Holden Tolley chipping in at 1-for-3 apiece.
   Jessee Rogers accounted for the lone Bristol hit, batting 1-for-2.

   South Holston 1
   South Holston outhit the Johnson City club 4-3, but the Americans won where it counts the most -- on the scoreboard.
   Johnson City's Carter McVeigh went 1-for-1, Jordan Eddy 1-for-2 and Garrett Chase 1-for-3 to back the solid work of winning pitcher Luc Johnson.
   Derek Lingerfelt topped South Holston with a 2-for-3 performance. Zach Schwartz followed at 1-for-2 while Samantha Peters went 1-for-3.
   The Americans scored six runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away. The two teams endured a 40-minute lightning delay.
