Carter County American dispatches Blountville

By Tim Chambers

Racing out of the gate like a prize thoroughbred, the Carter County American 12-year-old little league all-stars raced past Blountville 8-1 Saturday morning in Zone 2 action at Jim Ensor Field.
CCAL wasted no time getting on the board, scoring four runs in the first inning. Zack Boles led off with an infield single and stole second on the next pitch. Tyler Ballard lined a base hit to right, scoring Boles for a 1-0 advantage.
After a walk to Dan Campbell, Bret Price stroked a double to plate two more for a 3-0 lead. A groundout by Jonathan Chapman scored Price for the fourth run.
CCAL tallied three more in the third when Justin Pierce singled, as did Dan Campbell. An infield single by Price loaded the bases.
Pierce was able to come home after a botched pick-off attempt. A ground-out by Franky Covarrubias allowed Campbell and the speedy Price to score from second for an 7-0 lead.
Pierce was excellent on the mound, allowing singles to Brian Bourne and Hunter Stevens in the fourth, but was able to pitch out of the jam by striking out two batters and getting a ground ball out to preserve the shutout.
Dan Campbell added some insurance in for CCAL when he slammed a home run over the right center-field wall in the fourth inning as Pierce and the defense shut down Blountville the rest of the way.
Campbell had a big day, going 2 for 2 with a walk. Price contributed a 2-for-3 performance and scored twice for CCAL while Covarrubias added two singles.
Boles, Ballard, Pierce and Knox Eryasa contributed solo hits for the Stars of Carter County. Pierce went the distance on the mound, striking out eight while walking only two batters to earn the win.
"I thought we showed up to play today," stated CCAL manager Jerry Pierce. "We put the bat on the ball, got some great pitching and played excellent defense.
"It takes all three to win. This game was won because of a total team effort."
Carter County American will play again Tuesday night at 8:30 against Johnson City Major.
