American
from staff reports
Jordan Hodges went 3-for-3 and Drew Chambers belted a three-run
home run on Wednesday night, lifting Elizabethton National
to a 10-6 victory over Carter County American in the 11-year-old
Mid-Summer Classic at T.J Burleson Field.
E-National took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first as Hodges
and Joe Guinn singled before Jacob Davis walked, Jake Hodge
lofted a sacrifice fly, then Chambers crushed his three-run
shot.
A Chambers walk, singled by Cody Hyder, Chase Depew and Hodges,
and a double from Davis, helped E-National extend its lead
to 9-2 in the third.
CCA, though, got back in the game by plating four runs in
its end of the third. Singles by Justin Pierce and Tyler Jaynes
scored three runs after four errors and a pair of walks by
the Nationals.
E-National tallied its final runs in the fifth, with Hyder
inducing a base on balls, stealing second and coming home
on a Depew base hit.
CCA put a couple of runners on base in the sixth, but Ethan
Fleenor pitched a scoreless inning to cap a complete-game
victory from the hill.
Depew and Hyder finished with two hits apiece for the Nationals,
with Chambers, Davis and Matt Febuary all going 1-for-2.
Jonathan Chapman topped the Americans with a pair of hits.
Micah Cates went 1-for-1 while Pierce and Dakota Waters both
batted 1-for-2. Jaynes chipped in at 1-for-3.
Unicoi County and Johnson City National played the nightcap
on Wednesday, with Unicoi riding a complete-game, nine-strikeout
performance by D.W. Whitson for a 7-5 win.
E-National will take on Johnson City American at 6 p.m. tonight.
Both E-National and CCA will be involved in semifinal action
on Friday night. The tournament consolation will be played
on Saturday at 12 p.m., followed by the championship at 2.
