Unaka trio receives all-state recognition

from staff reports
A trio of athletes from Unaka were recently honored by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association as Unaka baseballer's Rusty Chambers and Randy Swearingen, with Lady Ranger softballer Jessica Moffitt were all named All-State for the 2003 season.
Swearingen was listed as a pitcher, while Chambers made the 1-A squad as an infielder. Moffitt was listed as an infielder on the 1-A softball group.
Both Unaka squads fared well in the postseason, as the baseball squad was two and out in the State Tournament, while the softball group fell to Harriman in the State Sectionals.
Other local athletes to make the squads include: Sullivan North's Brandon Summey, Sullivan Central's Eric Allen and Volunteer's Tim Ofiero on the 2-A baseball squad, Sullivan East's Nick Hill and Brett Morton, Greeneville's Chase Greenway and Science Hill's Matt McGahey on the 3-A baseball group.
Unicoi County's Beth Haun (Softball 2-A) and Dobyns-Bennett's Kelli DePew (Softball 3-A) were the only other Upper East Tennessee representatives on the softball squads.
