Cavanaugh, Childress ETSU athletes of year from staff reportsJOHNSON CITY-- East Tennessee State's department of athletics has announced that Carey Cavanaugh and Dimeco Childress have been selected as ETSU's female and male athletes of the year for the 2000-2001 school year. A member of the volleyball team, Cavanaugh was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Year after her senior season, and was a three-time All SoCon selection during her career. Cavanaugh led the team to a 20-5 overall record in 2001, which included a 15-5 Southern Conference record. She finished in the top 10 in the league in assists, hitting percentage and digs. Childress was also a Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year after leading the men's basketball team to its second-straight Southern Conference North Division regular season title in 2001-2002. Childress was chosen as SoCon Player-of-the-Week, and led the team in scoring with a 17.5 average. Childress scored over 20 points 11 times last season, highlighted by his Memorial Center record setting 42 point outburst against Western Carolina. He finished his career with 1,287 points. | |||||||
