A golf tournament created to benefit programs for the community's youth will swing into action later this month.
The ninth annual Dino Senesi Golf Classic is slated to tee off June 14 at the Elizabethton Municipal Golf Course. In addition to 18 holes, participants and the public can bid on University of Tennessee athletic memorabilia.
All proceeds generated from the tournament and auction will fund activities at the Elizabethton-Carter County Boys and Girls Club.
"It is a win-win deal for everybody and the money all goes to a great cause," Johnny Mills, one of the tournament's organizers, said Friday. Mills said more than 100 players have already signed up to play in this year's event. Maximum participation is 144 players.
Participants can enter the Senesi Classic through three sponsorship opportunities. The corporate sponsorship comes with a $1,000 entry fee. A corporate sponsor receives free play for two players and allows the sponsor to bring the organization's banner and display it on the golf course. A major level sponsor requires a $500 fee while a tee sponsorship comes at a $250 fee. Players can also enter the tournament with a cart sponsorship for $50. All sponsors have signs displaying their business or organization at one tee on the course during the event. Individual participants can play in the tournament for $100.
Outback Steakhouse will provide lunch for players at 11 a.m. with the tournament to begin at noon. All tournament participants will receive a goody bag, baseball hat and golf shirt as well as dinner provided by the Sand Trap restaurant. Several door prizes will also be given away including complimentary rounds of golf at local courses. Golf handicaps are not necessary to play.
Beyond golf, the tournament will also feature an auction and sure to draw collectors of Tennessee Volunteers sports memorabilia. One of several items up for auction is a Tennessee football game helmet autographed by former UT stars Peyton Manning and Jason Witten. Also up for auction will be a football signed by Tennessee Titans star quarterback Steve McNair.
"You do not have to play in the tournament to bid on these items," said Mills.
Winners will be determined at the close of the tournament. Four flight winners will receive a "special prize" he said.
Celebrity participants in this year's tournament are John Chavis, defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Vols football team, and Dewey Warren, All-American quarterback for the Vols during the mid-1960s and a teammate of Mills.
