Elizabethton Dizzy Dean squad ups record to 9-1

GRAY -- Jerry Berkley and Drew Chambers combined on a one-hitter while Jeff Peters went 3-for-3 and Cody Marley 3-for-4, leading Elizabethton's 14-year-old Dizzy Dean squad to a 16-5 win over Colonial Heights on Saturday in the Miracle Network Summer Slam 2004.
The team continues play in the event today at 2 p.m. A victory sends the 'Betsy boys to a 6 p.m. encounter, while a loss would mean they would play at 4 p.m.
Berkley worked two innings as the starters, and Chambers threw three innings of relief. Jonathan Canady and Dalton Williams added 2-for-3 efforts, and Chambers went 1-for-1 for Elizabethton.
In tournament play on Friday, Peters and Brooks Price both batted 3-for-3 as Elizabethton knocked off the Gray-Johnson City Storm by a score of 7-3.
Franky Birchfield batted 1-for-2, and Peters picked up the win from the mound. Elizabethton stands at 9-1 on the season.
Thursday's Games
KINGSPORT--Elizabethton had little trouble in a twin-bill with Colonial Heights, rolling to victories of 12-3 and 11-0.
In the 12-3 decision, J.D. Scalf pitched himself to a win while Peters, Wendell Loving, Price and Brandon Cole each batted 2-for-2. Nick Payne and Justin Peters chipped in at 1-for-2 apiece.
The 11-0 game saw Jeff Peters work the rubber for the victory, and work the opposing team for a 3-for-3 performance that included a home run.
Cole also went 3-for-3, with Price going 2-for-2 and belting a grand slam. Loving had a home run of his own.
