The Elizabethton Jr. Babe Ruth continued its season-ending
tournament after battling mother nature throughout the week.
Three games were played Saturday, with Moose and
David's Trophies earning spots in the championship game. Elks
and Elizabethton Herb and Metal will meet in the consolation
contest.
Elizabethton Herb & Metal 5
Elks Cubs 1
The recycle men used a strong pitching performance
from Tyler Blevins to knock off the big deer in the first contest
5-1. Dylan Shallcross supplied the offense for Herb & Metal,
going 3 for 4, including a double.
Nick Payne and David Donald had the only other
hits for the Reds. Jordan Meredith, Brandon Grindstaff, Jacob
Thomas, Tim Franklin and Justin Peters had the only hits for
the Cubs.
Elks Cubs 8
Tetrick's Marlins 7
The second contest went down to the wire, with
Elks earning the win with two outs in the last inning. The Marlins
had the undertakers almost buried but the deer just would not
die.
Tim Franklin roped a base hit with two outs, scoring
D.J. Reece and Jordan Meredith, who had walked, to earn a hard-fought
8-7 victory.
Jacob Thomas, Franklin and Justin Peters collected
two hits each to lead Elks while Meredith and Brandon Grindstaff
scored two runs apiece to help the cause.
Brandon Cole, Justin Conway, Josh Hardin and Jeremy
Sommers contributed two hit apiece to lead the Marlins. J. D.
Scalf and Jeremy Hall added one each.
Peters got the win in relief of Meredith while
Hardin took the loss for Tetrick's.
David's Trophies 10
Elizabethton Herb & Metal Reds 0
The plaque attack refused to be scrap metal for
the red men, ending the final contest in five. Mike Carpenter
pitched a masterpiece, allowing only a leadoff single to Brandon
Birchfield for the Reds' only hit of the game.
Carpenter struck out 12 of the 15 outs recorded
in the contest. Carpenter also led the hitting, going 2 for
3 with a double while Chris 'Bucket" Pierce added a 1-for-1
evening.
Cody Marley, Scott Burleson, Matthew Rasnick, Aaron
Bradford and Britt had one hit each to help the cause.
Bradford slammed a triple while Marley doubled
and scored three times.
After the championship game scheduled at 3:15,
regular season and tournament trophies will be awarded while
all-stars will be announced. The Chris King award will also
be given by Mr. Al King after the finale.
