from staff reports

The Smokey Mountain Classic in Knoxville was just that -- a true classic that ended up being settled by two excellent area teams.
The Johnson City Heat extracted a bit of revenge on the East Tennessee Riverdogs, knocking the 'Dogs off by a score of 9-6 in the championship.
The Heat outlasted the Knoxville Stars, the Westside Wizards of Columbus, Ohio; and the Alcoa Baseball Club to get to the semifinals, where it wore down the Kingsport Indians.
The East Tennessee Riverdogs bested the Knoxville Impact, the Jackson (N.C.) Blaze and the Kingsport Indians before nailing the Alcoa Baseball Club in the semifinals.
The championship contest was a spirited affair, with the Heat throwing Paul Hoilman seven innings for the win. The Riverdogs started Will Scheuer, who was relieved by Weston Issacs.
The 'Dogs' J.C. Atkinson finished the game.
Both teams were class acts for an excellent final game. The Riverdogs jumped out front early, and the Heat battled its way back for the win.
Next up for both teams is the Southern Classic this weekend in Johnson City.
