Piney Flats' Bandarra doubles his pleasure in fifth Mopar Mania

   BRISTOL -- Despite a somewhat ominous weather forecast, the Hensley Enterprises 5th Annual Mopar Mania proved to be quite a success, especially for Piney Flats' Larry Bandarra.
   Bandarra, who pilots a 1973 Dodge Challenger, took Saturday's Trophy class win after C.L. Elsea, of Bristol, Tenn., picked up a redlight in the finals. Bandarra got off the line in .097 seconds with an elapsed time of 12.261 at 108.47 mph to cruise to his first victory of the weekend.
   He came back on Sunday and knocked off Jim Dennison of Sevierville, Tenn., in the finals, to pick up win No. 2. Bandarra posted a .135 reaction time with a 12.318 elapsed time at 108.41 mph while Dennison and his 1966 Satellite cut a .344 green light with an 11.691 E.T. at 113.60 mph.
   Bristol's John Nelson, Jr., came close to capturing the Pro win on Saturday but couldn't find a way around Eugene Braswell of Todd, N.C. Braswell and his 1975 Duster recorded a .080 light with a 7.244 E.T. at 93.36 mph to oust Nelson and his 1972 Challenger in the finals. Nelson cut a .145 light with a 7.045 elapsed time at 95.81 mph.
   Saturday's Super Pro win went to Tony Parsons of Independence, Va., who drove his 1965 Coronet past Mike Buhrman of Sabillasville, Md., in the finals. Parsons came off the line with a .029 reaction time with a 6.930 E.T. at 92.67 mph to ease past Buhrmann's 1969 Dart and his .116 light with a 7.284 E.T. at 92.54 mph.
   Other winners included Seth Garrison in Quick 16 action and Ron Hamby in Slant 6 competition. Garrison, of Morgantown, N.C., piloted his 1970 Dart past Richard Miller of Roanoke, Va., to grab the win.
   Garrison had a.035 light with a 5.507 E.T. at 118.70 mph while Miller had a .170 reaction time with a 5.381 E.T. at 130.35 mph.
   Hamby, of Purlear, N.C., drove his 1966 Dart to the win over Rodney Hargis of Wartburg, Tenn., with a .016 light with a 12.828 E.T. at 101.41 mph. Hargis and his 1962 Lancer posted a .050 reaction time with a 13.247 E.T. at 97.87 mph.
   Action continues at Bristol Dragway this week with Ride Revolution Street Fights on tap tonight and on Thursday, June 3. Gates open at 5 p.m., racing begins at 6 p.m. The Sunoco Bracket Series returns to action Saturday, June 5. Gates open at 10:30 a.m.
