from staff reports

ATHENS -- The Milligan College Lady Buffs softball team won their first two games of the NAIA Region XII Softball Tournament in Athens, but lost in the third game of the day.
Milligan defeated Spalding (Ky.) 7-0, followed that victory by defeating Mid-Continent (Ky.) 10-4, then succumbed to Brescia (Ky.) 4-2 to force Milligan into the losers' bracket.
In the first game against Spalding, junior pitcher Traci Harrison pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing three hits with 11 strikeouts.
Against Mid-Continent, junior first baseman Brooke Davis went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and freshman shortstop Sarah Smith was 4-for-5 in the game with three runs of her own.
In the nightcap, against Brescia, five Milligan errors allowed Brescia back into the game after Milligan held a 2-0 lead. Junior pitcher Brandy Waddle pitched all seven innings without giving up an earned run in the contest.
Today, Milligan will once again play Mid-Continent at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to play Brescia at noon for the Region XII title and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament in Athens, Tenn.
Milligan or Mid-Continent will have to defeat Brescia twice to win the title.
Milligan (43-15) is the only team from the Appalachian Athletic Conference left in the region tournament, as regular-season champions, UVA-Wise and Virginia Intermont, were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday.
