Unicoi County defeats stubborn Lady 'Horns

from staff reports

ERWIN--The Johnson County Lady Longhorns were able to hang with state powerhouse Unicoi County before losing 6-2 in the first round of the District 1-AA softball tournament at the Lady Devil Diamond Friday afternoon.
Unicoi County did most of its damage in the first inning during a five-run frame that was capped by a grand slam from Rachel Tillson.
After that, Lady Longhorn pitcher Laura Peters was brilliant, as she gave up just one run the rest of the time.
Trailing 6-0 going into the top of the sixth, the Lady Longhorns rallied when Amanda Dowell and Cayla Lewis knocked in runs to cut Unicoi's lead to 6-2.
It looked as if the Lady Longhorns were going to cut even further into the Lady Blue Devils edge when Katie Nelson singled, but Lewis was thrown out at home plate to thwart the rally.
Unicoi County's Rachel Edwards shut down the Lady Longhorns in the seventh to end the scare given by the Lady Longhorns.
Amanda Eichhorn topped JCHS with two hits. The Lady Longhorns end their season at 4-19.
