Williams, Lady Rangers throttle Cherokee, 2-0

from staff reports

ROGERSVILLE--Riding a superb pitching performance by Danielle Williams, Unaka wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a 2-0 shutout of Cherokee on Wednesday afternoon.
Upping her record to 10-4, Williams hurled a three-hitter, struck out three batters and showed excellent control, walking one.
She and Tara Bishop had an RBI apiece for the Lady Rangers, who scored both of their runs in the top of the second inning.
Additionally, Unaka, now 17-9 overall (6-0 in conference), worked itself free from a couple of tough defensive situations.
The toughest situation occurred in the sixth, when the Lady Chiefs had the bases loaded with one out. However, Megan Heaton picked off the runner and third base, which proved to be huge because Cherokee followed with a single to reload the bases.
Williams then induced a 6-5 groundout to kill the Cherokee hopes.
The Region 1-A tournament will begin on Monday at Unaka's Hicks Field. The following Day 1 matchups are tentative: Jellico vs. Cloudland at 4 p.m.; University High vs. North Greene at 5:30 p.m., and Unaka vs. the Jellico-Cloudland winner at 7 p.m.
