Buffaloes end regular season, splitting twin bill with Union

   The Milligan College baseball team ended the 2004 regular season with an Appalachian Athletic Conference split with Union (Ky.) College Saturday afternoon, as Union won the first game 7-3 in 11 innings and the Buffs took the second game 4-1.
   With the results, Milligan finishes the regular season 34-20 overall and 20-7 in the AAC.
   In the first game, Milligan opened up the scoring in the first inning as leadoff hitter, junior second baseman Nathan Meade, tagged a double and advanced to third on a ground out from sophomore right fielder David Rusaw.
   Junior third baseman Dustin Price drove Meade home with a sacrifice fly caught at the fence in left field.
   Union tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Bubba Szary, and the Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth inning as David Fairbanks and Tim Galbraith scored on a single from Brandon Ketron.
   Milligan tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The first run of the inning was scored by freshman Ben Huff on a single from Meade into right center field. The tying run, from pinch runner Alex Della Mora, was scored on a single from Price up the middle.
   Both teams went scoreless until Union put four runs on the scoreboard in the 11th inning. Galbraith and Derrick Wynn both had RBI singles while Justin Barrier drove two runs across in the win.
   For Milligan in the loss, senior Todd Speas went two innings with four runs on four hits and two walks.
   At the plate for the Buffaloes, Meade went 2-for-5 with one run scored with a walk, and freshman Kory Kinnear was 2-for-3 at the plate. For Union, Brandon Ketron went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
   In the second game, the Bulldogs took the lead in the second inning on a Jeff Hall RBI single to score Justin Barrier.
   Milligan answered with three runs to take the lead in the third inning. Rusaw reached on a fielder's choice as Meade was forced out at second base, followed by a single from Dustin Price. With two outs, Kory Kinnear brought Rusaw around to score with his double.
   Senior Brian Miller scored Price and Kinnear with his single for the second and third run of the inning.
   The Buffs added one more run in the fifth inning when Rusaw tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kinnear to centerfield.
   The winning pitcher for Milligan was senior Chris Shockley as he pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run over seven innings of work with seven hits, no walks and seven strikeouts.
   For Milligan at the plate, Price went 3-for-3 with one run scored and a stolen base, Rusaw went 0-for-2 but scored two runs, Kinnear was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs and Brian Miller was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Leading the way for Union, Galbraith went 2-for-4 in the game.
   Next for Milligan will be the AAC Tournament in Johnson City at Cardinal Park. The first round starts Tuesday, May 4. The Buffaloes will find out their opponent when the bracket is announced tonight.
