Cobras capture Region XII title

The Virginia Intermont College men's tennis team claimed the NAIA Region XII title on Saturday defeating Bristol rival King College 6-0 in the finals of the event held at Berea, Kent.
   VI (18-7) received singles wins from Jorge Ascencio, Brandon Pike and Luis Lazo De La Vega en route to the win, while the pairings of Ascencio and Thiago Barbosa, David Halldorsson and Vinicius Bitencourt and Pike and De La Vega claimed doubles victories.
   Jorge Ascencio was Region XII Player of the Year. He is currently ranked #2 in the nation.
   Ron Worrell was tapped as Region XII Men's Coach of the Year.
   VI will now compete in the NAIA men's national tournament scheduled to begin May 12 in Peachtree City, Ga.
   VI WOMEN TAKE REGION XII TITLE: The Virginia Intermont College women's tennis team swept all five singles matches it played as the Cobras topped Indiana University Southeast 7-1 in the finals of the NAIA Region XII women's tennis tournament.
   Former Rural Retreat High School standout Erin Hall was among the singles winners, along with Kago Phatshwane, Vita Feldmane, Esther Mbugua and Felicia Ruiz.
   Kago Phatshwane was selected Region XII Player of the Year.
   Mary Lou Smith won Region XII Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row.
   VI (14-3) advances to the NAIA national tournament in Peachtree City, Ga.
