HV girls advance; EHS ousted

   Exploiting five first-inning errors by Sullivan North, Happy Valley took early command and never looked back in a 10-0 District 1-AA softball tournament victory on Saturday.
   The Lady Warriors, who tallied eight runs in the first inning, got two hits apiece from Terra Whaley and Kate Powell.
   Now 24-10 overall, Happy Valley advances to play Johnson County in the second round of the tournament on Monday at Volunteer High School. Game time is 7 p.m.
   The Lady Golden Raiders saw their season end at 4-15.

   CHURCH HILL -- Ashleah Dykes hit a three-run homer and made two key defensive plays Saturday, sending Volunteer to a 6-3 victory over Elizabethton in the District 1-AA softball tournament quarterfinals.
   Dykes' homer came in the second inning and staked the Lady Valcons (13-16) to a 6-2 lead.
   The left fielder caught a fly ball in foul territory to end the fifth inning, getting her team out of a bases-loaded jam.
   Furthermore, her catch of a sinking line drive and throw to the plate, where Abbie Jenkins was tagged out, resulted in a fifth-inning double play.
   Katie Hubbard had doubled and scored in the fifth for the Lady Cyclones (10-15), who were trying to stage a comeback effort.
   Volunteer grabbed a 3-0 lead with two outs in the first, where Kellie Simpson was hit by a bases-loaded pitch, then Kasey Gilliam and Mycah Arnold delivered base hits.
   Jenkins knocked an RBI single for Elizabethton in the bottom of the inning.
