Lady Cyclones bow to Unicoi

from staff reports

ERWIN -- The sum of the parts was greater than the whole on Wednesday for the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones, who made a good showing in a 6-2 setback to perennial Watauga Conference power Unicoi County.
Elizabethton outhit the Lady Blue Devils 12-8 and received a solid pitching performance from Mary Edgar. Unicoi, though, compensated with a three-run homer from Natalie Lockner, and by plating three unearned runs off two 'Betsy errors.
"We hit the ball real well," said Lady Cyclone coach Kenny Hardin. "I wish we could have strung together our hits a little bit better. But we had 12 hits and played a pretty good ballgame.
"Edgar pitched a good ballgame against a good team, there."
Unicoi tallied its three unearned runs in the first two innings, then Lockner went deep in the third to stake her team to a 6-0 advantage.
The Lady Cyclones broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth frame.
Brittany Smith and Maggie Austin both had 2-for-3 games to lead the way for Elizabethton offensively. Abbie Jenkins added a 2-for-4 effort and Katie Hubbard tagged a double.
Lockner pitched the win for the Lady Devils.
The Lady Cyclones and Hampton will meet today at EHS, first to finish a suspended game (restarting action in the top of the fifth inning), then to play a contest off the regular schedule. Action will begin at either 3 or 3:30 p.m.
