J.I. Burton standout Wells inks basketball pact with Buffaloes

from staff reports

Abe Wells, a 6-foot-8 senior basketball standout at J.I. Burton High School in Norton, Va., has signed a letter of intent to attend Milligan College and play basketball for the Buffs.
As a senior at Burton, Wells averaged 19 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for Coach Stan Wilson. He shot 58 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free throw line as he helped lead the Raiders to a 19-6 overall record and a berth in the regional semi-finals.
Wells was named to the first team of the Lonesome Pine District, Region D, and Southwest Virginia All-Star teams. He was also selected to the Class A honorable mention All-State team.
Milligan coach Tony Wallingford had the opportunity to work with Wells last summer during the Milligan Post Player/Perimeter Player Camp. He came away from that camp very impressed with Wells and his potential.
"Abe has advanced level skills and a great upside," Wallingford said. "He's got an excellent shooting touch and for a big man handles the ball exceptionally well. With some added strength and weight, I am confident he will be an outstanding player for us."
Wells plans to major in history with teacher certification at Milligan. He is the son of Chico and Becky Wells of Norton, Va.
