Lady Cyclones 2-2 in Eastman

from staff reports

KINGSPORT -- The annual Eastman Invitational softball tournament brought out a very respectable performance from the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones.
The team won two and lost two, with one of those defeats coming to a high-powered Baylor.
'Betsy set sail with a 3-1 victory on Friday night over Sullivan South, taking advantage of a three-hit pitching effort by Jessica Robinson.
Robinson struck out five batters while gaining the win, and Mary Edgar and Abbie Jenkins banged out two hits apiece in a seven-hit EHS attack.
   Maggie Austin contributed an RBI.
Elizabethton played three games on Saturday, starting with a 2-1 conquest of Greeneville. Kristie Keys allowed just four hits and had three strikeouts as the winning pitcher, and Tia Nave and Austin each had one hit and an RBI.
Britney Smith contributed a base hit to the Lady Cyclone cause. Elizabethton totaled eight hits as a team.
The Lady Cyclones followed up with a 10-0 loss to private school Baylor, but four of those runs came late in the game, after EHS coach Kenny Hardin had started to freely substitute.
'Betsy accounted for two hits -- one each by Robinson and Austin -- against the Chattanooga powerhouse.
In the Lady Cyclones' final showing, they dropped a tight-knit battle with Morristown East, which escaped with a 3-2 decision.
Leading a six-hit Elizabethton offense was Jenkins with a pair of hits. Keys added a hit, and an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Robinson threw well in defeat, striking out three in the process.
"We went 2-2, so I'm pretty pleased with that," Hardin said. "We could have won that last game -- it could have went either way -- and we played Baylor better than most people have. They have one of the best teams in the state, and we played with them for three or four innings.
"We're just playing to get better, and that's what we're doing."
The Lady Cyclones will play a makeup game at home against Johnson County, visit Sullivan Central Tuesday, then go to Unicoi County for another makeup on Wednesday.
