Lady Buffs have way with Rams

   The Milligan College Lady Buffs swept an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from Bluefield (Va.) College Thursday by scores of 4-0 and 9-1.
   With the wins, Milligan improves to 33-11 overall and 19-3 in the AAC.
   In the first game, Milligan took a two-run lead in the fifth inning as freshman shortstop Sarah Smith led the inning off with a walk.
   Freshman second baseman Leah Fritts moved Smith around with a sacrifice bunt and ended up at third base. Smith scored as freshman centerfielder Amanda Verner reached safely on an error by Sandy Turner at third base.
   As freshman third baseman Megan Aldridge reached safely by an error by Kristen Norman at her short stop position, Verner scored.
   Milligan extended the lead in the sixth inning. With two outs, Smith reached first with a single, and stole second base, then third base. As Smith was stealing third, a throwing error by Bluefield's catcher, Kristi Seipp, allowed Smith to score.
   In the seventh inning, the Lady Buffs added one more run. Verner led the inning by reaching safely on an error by Turner at third base and stole second base. On a ground out by sophomore Courtney Ruth, Verner moved to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Aldridge.
   The winning pitcher for the Lady Buffs was junior Traci Harrison (11-3) as she pitched a complete game shut out only allowing three hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk. The losing pitcher for Bluefield was Morgan Tomlinson as she gave up four runs, one earned run on four hits.
   At the plate for Milligan, Smith went 2-for-2 with a walk, and scored two runs with two stolen bases. Aldridge and Harrison each went 1-for-3. Amy Surrency went 1-for-2 for Bluefield in the first game.
   In the second game, Milligan's junior pitcher Brandy Waddle gave up an unearned run to Bluefield in the first inning.
   Leadoff hitter Kristen Norman reached on a fielding error by Ruth at first base and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Tomlinson. A wild pitch allowed her to reach third and a sacrifice fly to leftfield from April Hall scored her.
   Milligan answered in the second inning with a run Ruth led the inning off with a walk and was followed by Rebecca Gilley who was walked also. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance a base. As Leah Fritts reached first by an error by Norman at her shortstop position, Ruth scored from third.
   The Lady Buffs added another run in the third inning. Verner led the inning of with a single and was forced out at second as Ally Horner reached first on the fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice allowed Aldridge reached first as Horner was forced out at second base.
   Aldridge advanced to second on a wild pitch from Lauren Shepard. With two outs, and a runner on second, Ruth drove her in with a double.
   The Lady Buffs put the game out of reach for Bluefield in the fifth inning. Smith started the inning with a walk and after two passed balls; she was standing on third base. A single from Verner scored Smith.
   After a fly out by Horner, Aldridge doubled to place herself and Verner in scoring position. A fielder's choice from Ruth which did not result in an out scored Verner from third.
   An error by Amanda Spurlin in left field allowed Rebecca Gilley to reach safely and Aldridge to score the third run of the inning. Bluefield changed pitchers and went to Morgan Tomlinson and her first pitch, a wild pitch allowed Ruth to score and Gilley to advance to third with Brandy Waddle at the plate. Waddle singled to score Gilley from third.
   With Fritts at the plate, Waddle stole her first base of the year and moved to third as the short stop could not hold on to the ball as it rolled away from her. Fritts drove Waddle in with a RBI single to cap the six run inning.
   Milligan added one more run in the sixth inning as Verner led the inning off with a walk and stole second base. After two outs from Horner and Aldridge, a single from Ruth scored Verner.
   Waddle (14-5) picked up the win for Milligan on the mound. She pitched a complete game no hitter only allowing one run which was unearned with six strikeouts. For Bluefield in the loss, Lauren Shepard as she pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on five hits.
   At the plate for Milligan in the second game, Verner went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Ruth was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
   The next game for Milligan will be Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Buffs host UVA-Wise in a key Appalachian Athletic Conference match up starting at 2 at Anglin Field.
