EHS falls to Pioneers on rain-muddied field

from staff reports

The Elizabethton soccer team fell 5-1 to David Crockett Tuesday evening in less-than-perfect conditions on the rain-muddied Pioneer field.
Senior captain Robert Cogan scored the Cyclones' sole goal in the first half off an assist from Josh Fair to put Elizabethton in the 1-0 lead.
"They won five to one, but I think that doesn't really tell you how the game was played," said Elizabethton coach Bill McClay. "We had a lot of shots on the goal and a lot of opportunities to score."
Elizabethton had at least 20 shots on the Pioneer goal, but David Crockett made their nine shots count, kicking five in for points.
"We just didn't perform and they weren't going to lay down for us," McClay said. "Overall, the team is disappointed."
By halftime, Crockett had tied the game at 1-1, and four minutes into the second half scored again to take the lead. Around the midpoint of the second half, the Pioneers scored a twice more within a couple minutes.
"Everybody was slipping and sliding, but they were able to slip the ball in the goal," McClay said.
The Cyclones are now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They will travel to face Tennessee High at 7 p.m. on Friday.
