Lady Buffs split twin-bill with Tennessee Wesleyan

   The Milligan College Lady Buffs softball team split an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday as Milligan won the first game 4-0 and lost the second game 2-1.
   With the results, Milligan is now 31-11 overall and 17-3 in the AAC while Tennessee Wesleyan is 15-3 in the conference.
   In the first game, Milligan scored early on the Lady Bulldogs. In the first inning, senior catcher Shelby Banion led things off with a single and scored on a triple by freshman center fielder Amanda Verner.
   Tennessee Wesleyan went to the bullpen with the bases loaded of Lady Buffs to bring in Kristen Bridges to pitch. She did not allow any more Lady Buffs to score in the inning.
   The Lady Buffs added two more runs in the fifth inning as Banion and Verner both scored on a single from freshman third baseman Megan Aldridge.
   Milligan posted one more run in the sixth inning as freshman Ally Horner, who was pinch running for Brandy Waddle scored on a single by Courtney Ruth.
   The winning pitcher was Brandy Waddle as she pitched a complete game shut out with only one hit allowed with seven strikeouts and no walks. The losing pitcher for Tennessee Wesleyan was Janeil Draffen as did not record an out in the first inning giving up one run on two hits.
   At the plate, Shelby Banion went 3-for-4 with two runs, Amanda Verner went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Megan Aldridge went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and hit by a pitch. The lone hit for Tennessee Wesleyan was a double in the sixth inning from Nicole McGrew.
   Milligan opened the scoring in the second game as well. In the second inning, freshman second baseman Ashley Mashburn led the inning off with a double followed by a walk to Waddle. Sarah Smith singled to load the bases for Ally Horner. Horner drove home Mashburn with a sacrifice fly to center field.
   Tennessee Wesleyan answered in the third inning as Nicole McGrew scored on a single from Cyndi Gilpin.
   The Lady Bulldogs took advantage in the seventh inning of a leadoff triple by Leslie Vess. She came around to score on a double by Jessica Greene.
   The losing pitcher was Traci Harrison as she pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout. Rachelle Hyder picked up the win pitching seven innings giving up one run on four hits.
   At the plate for Milligan, Ashley Mashburn and Courtney Ruth went 1-for-3. Jessica Greene went 2-for-4 for Tennessee Wesleyan in the second game.
   Next for Milligan will be a home doubleheader against Bluefield (Va.) College next Thursday afternoon as the games start at 2 at Anglin Field.
