MOUNTAIN CITY--A good day of doubles by the Elizabethton
High School boys tennis team helped the Cyclones avoid what
would have been the upset of the year in the Watauga Conference.
Down 4-2 going into the doubles matches, Elizabethton
won all three matches to earn a 5-4 win over a pesky Johnson
County Longhorn squad at the JCHS Tennis Courts.
Elizabethton's Curtis Brumit and Devin Johnson
took 8-0 wins, but Adam Cornett, Justin Genaile, James Cox and
Judd Shoun all stepped to the fore for the Longhorns.
Cornett won 4-6, 2-6, 3-6 over David Reece in a
battle of top players.
Genaille defeated Jamis Gouge 8-4, Cox knocked
off Jordan Peters 8-5 and
Shoun beat Jared Tetrick 8-6 to force the Cyclones
to play catch-up.
Reece teamed up with Brumit for an 8-2 win at No.
1 doubles over
Cornett and Genaille. After Gouge and Johnson won
at No. 2, Peters and
Tetrick clinched the match for Elizabethton with
an 8-2 triumph over Angel
and Gerace.
Despite the Longhorns losing the match overall,
the win by Cornett
pretty much gives him the top seed in the upcoming
District Tournament.
Reece and Cornett ended up splitting their two
meetings this year.
They played three sets instead of a pro-set due
to the magnitude of the match.
The Lady Cyclones didn't have it near as tough,
as they beat Johnson County 9-0.
Amanda Pike, Liz Dove, Allison Parlier, Abby Bremer,
Ashley Street and Kayla Culler all won easily for EHS.
