ETSU splits with Winthrop

from staff reports

Erwin native Linsday Lane's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning drove in Danielle Spetar for the game winning run as ETSU defeated Winthrop 2-1 in the first game of Wednesday's double header at Kiwanis Park.
However, the Lady Bucs (17-20) made some costly mistakes in the field to fall 6-3 to the Lady Eagles (20-24) in game two.
Tiffany McVay picked up the win in game one for ETSU pitching a complete game with only one earned run and nine strikeouts, while scattering seven hits. She was competiting against Winthrop's Kelli Johnson, who also gave up one earned run and struck out seven.
The nightcap started off like game one until Winthrop opened the floodgates in the top of the third with five runs. Lane had a sac fly in the bottom fram, but McVay helped the Lady Eagles go up by three runs again with a solo shot in the fourth.
ETSU will get back in Southern Conference play this weekend when they host Georgia Southern in a three-game series at Kiwanis Park.
