CCB takes STAR Preseason Invite

By Wes Holtsclaw

Despite being down 3-0 for the majority of the game, the Carter County Bank team bounced back despite all odds, winning the Elizabethton STAR Little League Invitational 4-2 over Valley Forge Auction at the Jim Ensor Field.
After a tough first inning, it was a good outing for CCB pitcher Chase Depew, who tossed nine strikeouts in six innings of play. However, the first inning was almost enough for VFA.
CCB began the game behind the plate, as the defense from Valley Forge Auction was simply too much early. VFA had a better time behind the bats.
Garrett Dykes opened with a walk for VFA, and after a John Robinson strikeout, was hammered in from a Blake Hopson double. A follow up double from Brandon Woods put Auction up 2-0 after the first inning.
The second inning was awesome defense from both teams and pitchers, as both teams swept their first three batters.
Carter County Bank saw some signs of hope in the third inning, as a Heath
Honeycutt single gave the team their first hit of the game. Ethan Gough would reach base on a fielder's choice, but they were unable to score.
Defense and pitching prospered for Carter County during the next at bat from Valley Forge Auction. Depew tossed two strikeouts en route to a sweep, denying Valley Forge a chance to score any more runs.
The fourth inning could be simply stated with the word comeback. Carter County bounced back after an RBI double from Chase Depew, followed by an RBI single from Kenny Yarberry to tie the game at 2-2. An error allowed Yarberry the score, giving Carter County the 3-2 lead.
Valley Forge Auction came back behind Brandon Woods, Chris Dunbar, and Justin Peters, loading the bases; however, Cepew would be too tough, striking out two more.
The fifth inning was defensive, as both teams allowed a hit, but sat down the other three batters.
Carter County got things going in the sixth inning, as Cody Buck made a base from an weeor, and was singled in by Derrick Mann, giving Carter County Bank the 4-2 lead.
Valley Forge Auction would make one last steaming effort, but would fall short, as pitching and defense from Carter County Bank was enough to hold on for the 4-2 win.
Blake Hopson led the hitting for Valley Forge Auction, going two for three with a double and an RBI. Chase Depew, Derrick Mann and Kenny Yarberry led Carter County Bank on the evening with a hit and an RBI apiece.
Congratulations to both teams and all competitiors of the STAR Invitational for a great tournament.
