A gnat is a aggravating little bug, but Volunteer was having problems with another type of Nat.
Nat Treadway pitched a brilliant six-hitter in helping the Elizabethton junior varsity defeat the visiting Falcons of Volunteer 9-6 at Elizabethton High School.
Jake Berkley and Cody Eggers each banged out three hits and Treadway helped his own cause with two base knocks to make up a portion of the 14 hits the Cyclones recorded for the contest.
Ricky Garrison contributed two hits, while Nathan Bishop, Trevor Hyder and Jarred Thomas picked up the other hits on the evening for EHS.
Flemino collected two of the six hits for Volunteer. Hinkle, Ja. Frazier, Noe, and Duncan picked up the other hits for Volunteer.
The Cyclones took a 3-2 first inning lead to begin the contest. Volunteer came back to take a 4-3 lead in their frame of the third before EHS knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning.
Volunteer was able to plate a solo run in the fourth. Elizabethton was looking to establish the momentum and responded with three runs to re-establish their lead at 7-5.
Treadway shut the Falcons down one-two-three in the top of the fifth with the Cyclones edging their advantage to 8-5 with a single run in their frame of the fifth.
The visitors from Church Hill kept within striking distance as they managed to score a meager run in the top of the sixth. 'Betsy put a little insurance on the board in their portion of the inning to take the 9-6 lead.
Treadway and the Cyclone defense shut the Falcons down in the final inning to record the big win. Each team committed four errors to round out the final statistics of the contest.
