HV, Hampton forge split

from staff reports

Victory was in order for two teams on Thursday as the Happy Valley and Hampton softball teams split a middle school doubleheader.
Happy Valley won the first game 6-2, while Hampton came back to capture a 9-3 decision.
In game 1, Maggie Austin led the way for the Lady Warriors, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Jennifer Black and Tiffany O'Quinn were 1-for-2 with an RBI apiece, while Randi Williams chipped in at 1-for-3.
Samantha Canter had an RBI for coach Josh Wandell's HV club, which received good pitching from Canter and Hannah Banks.
Tops for the Lady Bulldogs were Melissa Norris and Lauren Pitman with three hits apiece.
The second game saw Hampton coach Sally Whitehead collect her first win over Happy Valley in six years on the job.
With Paige Blevins doing a good job on the mound, Melissa Norris banged out a double to lead the Lady 'Dogs offensively.
Whitney Andrews, Lacey Oliver and Pitman each had a base hit.
For error-prone HV, Austin turned in another 2-for-2 outing. O'Quinn and Williams each contributed RBIs while Mallory Markland socked a fifth-inning double to begin a rally that was short-lived.
   Black was solid in relief.
