TSWA puts four Carter players on
its all-state teams
from staff reports
The 2003-04 Tennessee Sportswriters Association
all-state basketball teams were released on Sunday, and the
selections were not without some Carter County flavor.
Three Unaka players, Rusty Chambers, Tyler McCann
and Julie Roberson, were voted to the Class A squad, while
one Elizabethton Lady Cyclone, Rikki Baughman, grabbed a spot
on the Class AA team.
Chambers, a senior forward/guard, was a driving
force in the Rangers' season-long run to a state championship,
earning such honors as Watauga Valley Conference Player of
the Year, MVP of the District 1-A and Region 1-A tournaments
and a spot of the Class A State All-Tournament team.
McCann, a junior guard, saved his best basketball
for the postseason, becoming the Class A State Tournament
MVP after claiming a spot on the District 1-A All-Tournament
team.
Roberson played a crucial role in the Lady Rangers'
first trip to a state tournament. Unaka junior center became
MVP of the Region 1-A tournament after being named to the
All-Watauga Valley and District 1-A All-Tournament squads.
As for Baughman, she led the Lady Cyclones to
their second district tournament title and their first regional
tournament title, claiming MVP honors in both tourneys.
The junior forward/guard was also MVP in the
Watauga Conference.
