Buffs gain split versus NG College

   The Milligan Buffaloes on Tuesday split a non-conference doubleheader with North Greenville (N.C.) College by the scores of 11-6 as the Buffs lost the first game and 5-4 in the Milligan victory.
   The Buffs move to 16-13 on the season.
   In the first game, North Greenville took a two-run lead in the first inning. Both runs scored on a double from Jasteven Tate. NGC added another run in the second inning as Nick Pinckey's single allowed Vince Dimarco to score.
   The Buffs turned the offense on in the bottom half of the second inning. Freshman first baseman Kory Kinnear started the rally with a one out single and advanced to second as freshman Thomas Lister was hit by a pitch.
   Kinnear was forced out at third and junior Nathan Chandler reached first on the fielder's choice. Senior shortstop Brad Hitch reached base with a single to load the bases for sophomore Will Little, and with Little's walk, Lister scored.
   Sophomore Nathan Meade scored Cody Whitlock, the pinch runner for Chandler, and Hitch with a single to right field. Jacob McAllister brought Little and Meade home with his double.
   In the fourth and fifth, the Crusaders added a total of five runs. In the fourth, NGC added a run as Daniel Rochester scored on Travis Brown's sacrifice fly to Will Little in centerfield. In the fifth inning, Tate scored on a sacrifice fly from Dimarco.
   Milligan went to the bullpen and senior Brian Miller came in for Adam Taylor. The first batter Miller faced, Rochester scored Robbie Daniels with a single, and would move to third after two passed balls. Senior Chris Shockley came in relief of Miller and his first batter, Travis Brown brought home two more Crusaders with his single.
   Milligan cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Meade led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a stolen base, then to third on a passed ball. Dustin Price's two out RBI single into right field allowed Meade to score.
   NGC added three more runs in the seventh inning as Patrick Leonard emptied the fully loaded bases with his three run double down the left field line.
   For Milligan on the mound, Adam Taylor picked up the loss as he went 4 2/3 allowing six runs, five earned runs on three hits with six walks. At the plate for the Buffs, Nathan Meade went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a stolen base. In the win, Travis Brown went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, two walks and three RBIs. Jonathon Guest picked up the win going seven innings allowing six runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
   In the second game, North Greenville jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning on Jasteven Tate's sacrifice fly to score Travis Brown.
   Milligan answered the deficit in the second inning. Thomas Lister, with one out, reached first with a walk. Pinch runner Cody Whitlock stole second base. Freshman Ben Huff reached first safely on an error by NGC's shortstop. Freshman shortstop Alex Della Mora brought home Whitlock and Huff with his double, and Della Mora scored on a single from Will Little.
   NGC cut into the lead in the third inning as Nick Pinckey scored on a single from Patrick Leonard.
   The Buffaloes pushed the lead back out to two runs in the bottom half of the third inning as David Rusaw drove Dustin Price in with a double.
   The Crusaders added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at four runs. In the fourth, Robbie Daniels scored on a single from Daniel Rochester and in the fifth inning, Pinckey scored on a fielder's choice from Tate.
   Milligan would win the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With one out, Nathan Meade was hit by a pitch from Nick Grooms. Jacob McAllister flied out to the catcher in foul territory. On the catch, Meade tagged at first and advanced to second base. Dustin Price drove Meade in with a single up the middle to win the game for the Buffaloes.
   On the mound for the Buffs, Nathan Chandler picked up the victory as he went 2 2/3 innings not allowing a run, with two hits and two strikeouts. At the plate for Milligan, Dustin Price went 2 for 4 with the game-winning RBI and also scored a run. Alex Della Mora went 1 for 3 at the plate with a RBI double. For NGC in game two, Nick Groomes picked up the loss as he pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up five runs, two earned runs on six hits.
   Next for Milligan will be a three game non-conference series with Coker (S.C.) College. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game starts at 2 p.m.
